DEREK COPELAND KICKS OFF NEW SHASTA SPEEDWAY ERA WITH SUPER LATE MODEL TRIUMPH

ANDERSON, Calif. (May 4, 2025) – Anderson’s Derek Copeland enjoyed home field advantage on Saturday night at Shasta Speedway, ushering in the new era for the .375-mile speedway by winning the 125-lap Super Late Model feature. Copeland led time trials then charged to the lead from eighth on the grid to take the $2,000 grand prize. It kicks off the run towards the $10,000 series championship as well. Copeland was joined by Canada’s Jimmy White in the Speed Tour Super Modifieds, Robby Czub in the INEX NorCal Legends, Kyle Borden in the Bombers, and Peter Smith III in the Hornets as winners during the 2025 season opener with nearly 90 teams participating.
Sacramento’s Eric Price, Jr. led the 15-car Super Late Model field to green for the nightcap before a strong crowd. Stockton champion Joey Stearns and multi-time Shasta winner David Miller of Coquille, Oregon got together in turn two for a caution on lap 13 while battling for second.
Copeland restarted alongside Price for the restart. Copeland went the long way around to swoop past Price to lead lap 14.
Price anchored the second pack for the second position for the first half of the race. Brandon Barnwell of Bridgeville finally found his way underneath Price after following for dozens of laps. Barnwell took over second on lap 63 and hung Price out to dry, with Williams’ Dane Nissen using lapped traffic as a pick to take over third as well.
The race stayed green until lap 85 when Jerry Peterson of Blocksburg slowed on the front stretch to require a caution flag. David Miller had charged back to fourth by that stage of the race. Lane Anderson of Fort Bragg spun out of the top-five off the front bumper of Noel McCormack, Jr. for a caution on lap 88 as well.
McCormack and David Dillinger then tangled on the front stretch, bringing out the caution with just five laps remaining. Copeland held firm over the final five circuits, taking the $2,000 victory. Coming to the finish in turn three, Barnwell and Miller collided and spun for second. The incident allowed Dane Nissen to scoot through for second place. 13th-starting Louie Shaha of Fortuna, Dillinger, and Anderson were the top-five finishers.
The Speed Tour Super Modifieds made their lone 2025 Shasta Speedway stop on Saturday night with 15 winged warriors in the pits. Bobby Dalton led qualifying with a strong 13.507 second lap while heat races were claimed by Washington’s T.J. Sneva and Roger Galleano.
Sneva stormed ahead to a comfortable lead on the high speed field in the 35-lap feature. On lap 11, Sneva suffered an issue with his top wing in turn two that sent him for a spin and relinquished the lead. Canada’s Jimmy White assumed the lead with Jim Birges and Dalton running closely together.
Birges tried the high side and the low side on multiple occasions to try to seize the lead. Birges then spun into turn three with a mechanical failure, ending his challenge for the win on lap 27.
White held off Dalton over the final eight laps to win the Speed Tour Super Modified 2025 opening night, followed by 2024 series champion Randy Anderson of Tacoma, Washington, Art McCarthy, Jr., and Tony Thomas.
An outstanding field of NorCal INEX Legends participated in a pair of 20-lap B-Mains and 35-lap feature on Saturday night. Huntington Beach’s Robby Czub prevailed in the feature.
Cameron Austin of Santa Rosa led the first 22-laps of the feature before Czub took over control and brought 2024 NorCal Legends Series champion Brandon White of Eureka with him into second. Las Vegas’ Tanner Reif, a multi-time ARCA West race winner, passed Austin for third as well.
Landen Green and Tim Buzzard, Jr. collided on the backstretch to require a red flag for clean up on lap 27. Both drivers were uninjured. White hounded Czub over the final eight laps of the feature to no avail. Czub claimed victory over White, Reif, Austin, and Kai Lovell.
Kyle Borden won the 30-lap Bombers feature, using an outside maneuver to pass Scott MacLeod for the decisive move on lap 22 to take the win. Dustin Hills used a similar move to take over second as well, using his Hornet experience to run the high side. Mcleod settled for third followed by Bobby Crowell in fourth and Tim MacLeod in fifth.
Peter Smith III of Cottonwood won the 25-lap Hornets feature. Travis Root put on a valiant challenge, driving side by side with Smith across the finish line to lose by a nose. Hue Moua, Austin Graves, and Brayden Smith rounded out the top-five finishers. Smith also won the dash.
Round two of the Shasta Speedway championship divisions of the Super Late Models, INEX Legends, Bombers, and Hornets returns to the track on May 31st.
