DEREK COPELAND COMPLETES SUPER LATE MODEL CHAMPIONSHIP IN SHASTA WITH ROUND FOUR WIN

ANDERSON, Calif. (September 13, 2026) – Anderson’s Derek Copeland picked up his second Northstate Recycling 125-lap Super Late Model feature win of 2026 and his second consecutive championship at Shasta Speedway on Saturday night, leading the way in the Fan Appreciation night action on the .375-mile oval. Fan Appreciation Night activities included over 20 bikes given away to children along with an autograph session on the frontstretch before racing began. 16 Super Late Models took the green flag for the nightcap at the Shasta District Fairgrounds.

Livermore’s Ryan Philpott led the way at the start of the feature. A caution on lap four put a damper on the championship hopes for several drivers. 2026 Eureka feature winner Brandon Barnwell tangled with championship contender Trey Daniels of Fort Bragg, sending Barnwell hard into the frontstretch wall and relegating Daniels to the pits for repairs. Incoming third in points JoJo Stearns of Stockton collided with the rear of Myles Anderson of Fort Bragg while trying to avoid Barnwell’s spinning car. Stearns had a long pit stop to make repairs as well.

Copeland took the lead for the first of several lead changes of the night, using the outside line to lead by a nose before Philpott wrestled the lead back. Stearns and Daniels quickly charged into fifth and sixth by lap 31 before a caution for Christopher Heim spinning. Stearns then spun down the backstretch coming to the green flag for the restart and was unable to continue.

Copeland and Philpott again engaged for the lead with Copeland leading lap 31. Philpott retook the lead on a subsequent restart to lead lap 40. Copeland clawed back to Philpott to lead lap 47 in an incredible back and forth Super Late Model race. Daniels quickly advanced into third, then challenged Philpott for second. Daniels spun heading into turn one, bringing out the caution on lap 52. The spin relegated Daniels to restarting at the rear yet again.

Daniels sprinted through the field into third by lap 75. He then ran down Philpott for second and completed the pass with 34 laps remaining. Copeland maintained a ten car length advantage over Daniels over the final quarter of the race to take his second win of the season and the 2026 championship. Daniels finished second in both the race and the championship with a spirited effort. Philpott finished third followed by Ian Elliott and a strong fifth place race for Melanie Schmitt.

Jeremy Doss won a hard fought 40-lap feature for the NorCal Legend Series ahead of Sebastopol’s Cody Winchel. The duo raced nose to tail and side-by-side by many laps in the feature. After trying the high side on several occasions, Doss used the bumper to nudge past Winchel to lead lap 33. Doss led the final seven circuits for victory while Brandon White of Eureka and Kai Lovell drove into second and third respectively. Winchel finished fourth followed by incoming points leader Trey Daniels in fifth.

Mark Pothoff of Newberg, Oregon won a physical battle with Potter Valley’s Simi Tour for the 40-lap Modifieds feature win. After a bit of wheel banging and side-by-side action,. Pothoff made the decisive maneuver for the lead on lap 30 down the front stretch as Tour got sideways. Tour recovered to finish second followed by Timm Williams, Pat Tyree, and Charley Tour.

Multi-time Roseville champion Josh Whitfield joined the Street Stock action and won the 30-lap feature at Shasta Speedway. Multiple drivers experienced mechanical problems or spins, including Stephen Ghilarducci spinning in turn one and sparking a small grass fire in the infield when he drove away. Fire and safety officials quickly extinguished the blaze.

Brian King of Redding took the controls of a new No. 9 car in his comeback race. King took the lead from teammate Brenden Macleod on lap six using the outside line. Whitfield then took the lead from King on lap 10.

King was part of a tight battle for the second position before he experienced a significant fire heading into turn three. King was uninjured.

Whitfield led the final 20 laps for the win with Sacramento’s Kevin Owens taking second place. Ryan Lentz was third followed by David Dillinger and Scott Macleod.

Mark Felch of Redding passed both Colton Stankey and Peter Smith III in the late stages of the Hornets feature to grab victory. Smith’s second place finish preserved the championship by a single point over Felch. Chris Cushing finished fourth with Anthony Garcia in fifth.

The highly anticipated season finale for Shasta Speedway is set for October 2nd and 3rd with more details to be released soon.
